Varkaus Summer Classical Music Festival's opening concert "Meanings" on Friday 3rd of July at 18:00

The opening of the festival will be held at Tehtaan koulu on Friday 3rd of July at 18:00. The industrial heritage of Varkaus received the European cultural heritage label in the spring 2026, and it is particularly meaningful to open the festival at Tehtaan koulu, which was built in 1924.

Two works from the same year will be heard in the concert: composer Helvi Leiviskä's piano trio and E. Bloch's work Prayer for cello.

Before the concert at 17:00, University of Helsinki professor emeritus Eero Tarasti will present the program of the evening and the entire festival. This is preceded by a presentation of Tehtaan koulu at 16:30.

Artistic director and cellist Markus Hallikainen, pianist Tiina Karakorpi and violinist Mirka Malmi of the Radio Symphony Orchestra will perform at the opening concert.

Tickets €20 (at the door).
