Health control and environmental protection

The health protection authority of the city of Varkaus is the Central Savo Environment Board. Its tasks include food control, monitoring the quality of drinking and bathing water, inspections of dwellings in case of suspected health hazards, and monitoring of the Tobacco Act and nicotine products.

You should contact the health inspector in cases such as

• you are setting up a new food establishment
• there is a change of operator in the food premises
• you are planning to change or renovate a food premises
• you have a complaint about the quality or labelling of food, or about a food business
• you need advice or guidance on drawing up an own-checks plan
• you suspect you may have food poisoning
• you have doubts about the quality of well water
• you are setting up a new business e.g. beauty or pedicure salon, tattoo/beauty parlour, gym
• you suspect that dampness in your home or other factors are causing health problems
• you want information about a pest found in food or housing

The environmental protection authority of the City of Varkaus is the Central Savo Environmental Board. The environmental protection authority's tasks include monitoring air protection, water protection, soil and groundwater protection, waste management and noise abatement. The environmental protection authority is responsible for the following permits: environmental permits, permits under the Off-road Traffic Act, notifications of short-term noise nuisance and decisions on connection to water and sewerage networks. It is also responsible for monitoring the state of the environment, nature protection and giving opinions to other authorities.
