Varkaus-päivät City Event, what is it?
Varkaus-päivät is a unique city event for all Varkaus residents, held every year in September. Varkaus-päivät is part of the European Heritage Days.
In 2025, Varkaus-päivät will take place Fri - Sat 12 September - 13 September 2025.
- The program is created by local organizations and offers activities for children, youth, and adults alike.
- This year’s theme is “Our Built Heritage”, and the event features a wide range of experiences: musical performances, flea markets, workshops, events, light orienteering, and unforgettable moments for all ages.

The event celebrates в дорозі – On the Road, a contemporary documentation project launched in autumn 2024 in collaboration between Museum Centre Konsti and Ukrainians who have settled in Varkaus, and the exhibition created as its outcome.

Nuorten Talo (Youth House), Osmajoentie 28
At Nuorten Talo, you can take part in a historical photo orienteering adventure, where staff from Soisalo-opisto and the City of Varkaus Youth Services guide visitors through different residential areas of Varkaus via interactive activity stations. Expect all kinds of fun – from public dancing and fishing games to coffee breaks and miniature model building.
A visual presentation of the history of Nuorten Talo will also be on display. Refreshments are provided by Puurtila Martat. Free admission.

Mielensäpahoittaja is a familiar character from Tuomas Kyrö’s best-selling novels and a true cultural icon — now appearing in a musical comedy. The character is known for being constantly disgruntled, ranting about the problems of society, people’s attitudes, and modern technology, which he believes only makes life harder.
Despite his objections, the show features dancing and singing with familiar tunes from various decades.
"Well, musicals aren’t a natural way to tell a story. You sing the lines so no one understands a word, and then you jump around like you’ve got ants in your pants. But I don’t dance, and I don’t sing!"
Jukka-Pekka Löhönen stars as the grumpy old man, while Tiina Räsänen, the queen of tango, shines in the roles of the young wife and daughter-in-law.

On Zalaegerszeg's Square in front of the Family Centre, you can admire a real wheel loader — and little machine enthusiasts can even climb aboard! Indoors, the theme continues through play and exploration, with machine-themed games and a fun search activity where children look for hidden images of work machines on the walls.
This free event is especially designed for families with children. Come spend quality time together, play, and connect with other families in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. At the Family Centre, joy is shared!

The Community Bash offers fun for all ages! Enjoy relaxed togetherness with chalk art, a prize wheel, a café inside the school, and grilled sausages in the yard.
National costumes and their accessories are brought out to air and celebrated with dancing, led by musician Marjo Matilainen. No dress code – everyone is welcome to join the dance! The event is free and open to all. Admission to the event is free.
The street train will tour the Luttila area during the event, departing from in front of Luttila School. Seating is limited, and you may need to wait for your turn. Tickets are not sold in advance.

Literary Event: Hurskaat ja hauraat

Psychologist, musician, and non-fiction author Arto Julkunen from Varkaus presents his book Hurskaat ja Hauraat. Based on extensive background research, Julkunen discusses his work, which portrays the life of a religious community in Vehmersalmi and offers fascinating insights into the local history of the Savonia region in the post-war era.
The community was founded by preacher and prophet Tekla Holopainen, whose remarkable energy and life story are truly unique. The sisterhood provided a safe haven for women who had suffered in life. The community also operated a children’s home and a school, and carried out missionary work in Germany.
"For the broken, the seekers, and those who have found their path. For the pious and the fragile."

This walking event in Päiviönsaari invites you to explore the city's built history in a new light. Along the light orienteering routes, you may discover hidden details, spot things you've never noticed before, and see the city from a fresh perspective. Pick up instructions at the Tyyskä courtyard (Wredenkatu 4), where a café will also be open during the event.
All illuminated locations are within 700 meters of the starting point. Parking is available near Navitas, the Ilopisara Swimming Hall, and the City Hall. Lighting is provided by Festivaalimaa in collaboration with partners. Free admission.

What is it about?
Varkaus-päivät is a diverse city event for all Varkaus residents.
The event takes place in September, the month of European Heritage Days.
The event is held every year over two days, Fri-Sat.
In 2025, the event will take place from Fri 12 to Sat 13 September.
The programme will be organised by local organizations, each of whom will be responsible for their own event as part of a joint Varkaus-päivät programme.
The City of Varkaus Culture and Event Services will coordinate the whole project and be responsible for joint communication.
Event information is compiled on varkaus.fi/varkauspäivät and in a handy programme (in Finnish only)
The event will be communicated through traditional media, social media, online, posters and handouts, billboards and event calendars in the region. You can also help by telling people you know about the event.
Implementing the event
Varkaus-päivät City Event are coordinated by the City of Varkaus Culture and Event Services, which also organises some of the content. The event is organised by dozens of different organisations, including different city departments, associations, companies, parishes, volunteers and the free arts.
