Data protection is the protection of personal data
For the privacy and legal protection of service users, it is important that the City processes personal data appropriately and as required by law. Proper processing of personal data in accordance with the law is part of providing quality customer service.
In the services of the City of Varkaus, the personal data of the customer are processed only to the extent necessary for the service and only in accordance with the specific law applicable to each service, or in some specific cases with the explicit consent of the individual. The City of Varkaus does not collect personal data for commercial purposes.
Data Protection Officer
Under the current legislation in force, the City of Varkaus must have a Data Protection Officer. The Data Protection Officer's task is to support customers and staff in data protection matters. The Data Protection Officer is part of the Information Security and Data Protection Group, which aims to promote and coordinate data protection issues in the City of Varkaus.
In terms of data protection, it is not advisable to include sensitive information such as date of birth or personal identification number in the email when contacting the service. A short description of the event and your own contact details are sufficient, you will be contacted and asked for more detailed information. However, we recommend that you use the information request forms in the first instance.
Requests for information
As a customer of the City of Varkaus, you have the right to check your own data. If you notice any errors or inaccuracies in your information, you have the right to request that your information be corrected.

The form is sent using the Suomi.fi messaging service in a secure way. You must log in to the Suomi.fi messaging service with strong authentication to ensure that the information is about the right person. The service will guide you through the process of submitting your form.
Once your form has been submitted, it will go to the data collector. The request is stored in the electronic case management register. You may be asked to clarify your request if necessary. You will receive your information with your request either electronically via the Suomi.fi messaging service, as a printout by registered mail, or at the registrar's office.
The delivery time for the requested information is 14 days.

Fees for City of Varkaus documents
In addition to data protection legislation, the Publicity Act gives the right to request information contained in public authority documents. Under the Public Access Act, you have the right to request to inspect documents relating to you or to see the contents of documents that may or may have affected the handling of your case. Requests for information under the Publicity Act can be made by means of a request for documents. By choosing the right form, you will speed up the processing of your request.

Processing of personal data
Personal data is any information that directly or indirectly identifies an individual. For example, a name, personal identification number, occupation, location, email address, photograph, voice, IP address or even the registration number of a car can be personal data, the processing of which must take into account the data protection of the individual. Personal data may only be processed where there is a legitimate basis for doing so. We process personal data in the course of our various tasks.
