Environmental responsibility
The City of Varkaus Climate Programme was approved by the City Council on 31 May 2021.With the Climate Programme, Varkaus commits to the common climate goal of Central Savo, according to which the Central Savo region will be carbon neutral by 2035. Carbon neutrality requires an 80% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in Central Savo compared to 2007. The remaining emissions will be offset or sequestered in carbon sinks.
The aim of the City of Varkaus Climate Programme is to create a snapshot of the city's emissions and the factors affecting them to support decision-making. The programme will provide a more accurate view of emissions, understand the role and opportunities of the city organisation, and create an approach for measuring and monitoring emissions.
The Climate Programme presents the emissions and carbon sink situation of the City of Varkaus, an estimate of emissions trends up to 2035, sectoral overviews of emissions formation and estimates of emissions trends.
Strategic priorities for climate work
The priorities for climate work in the city of Varkaus focus on improving energy use and road transport efficiency and developing the circular and bioeconomy. The aim is to improve energy efficiency, increase material recycling, create new businesses and strengthen the vitality of the region.
The city of Varkaus' greenhouse gas emissions in 2018 were 146.3 kt CO2e. The main sources of emissions are heating and road transport. Overall, greenhouse gas emissions have decreased by 15% between 2005 and 2018, with an estimated reduction of 48% between 2018 and 2035, bringing the total reduction between 2005 and 2035 to 56%.
