Water supply

Water supply means the abstraction of water from surface and groundwater, its treatment and supply for domestic use, and the discharge and treatment of waste water. Stormwater is no longer considered water supply.

Legislation guarantees the responsibility of the water utility as a provider of safe and equitable services. Water supply is governed by the Water Management Act to ensure that residents have access, at a reasonable cost, to sufficient quantities of safe and wholesome water and adequate sanitation for health and environmental protection.

The municipality is responsible for the general development and organisation of water supply, while the water supply utilities are responsible for the implementation of water supply in their respective areas of operation, in accordance with the municipality's decision. The owner or occupier of a property is responsible for the water supply and installations on his property up to the point of connection.

Keski-Savon Vesi Oy is responsible for water supply in the Varkaus area.
