Varkaus is a European Heritage Label site.
The living industrial heritage of Varkaus was awarded the prestigious European Heritage Label in spring 2026. Here, nearly 300 years of industrial heritage is not just history. It represents continuous renewal, resilience, and the ability to build something new – an essential part of Varkaus’ identity and a part of Europe’s shared story.
Warkaus is truly one of a kind – Europe starts here!
The European Commission awarded the European Heritage Label to Varkaus’ industrial heritage in February 2026, together with 12 other sites. The label is granted to sites that have played a significant role in European history, culture, and integration. Varkaus is only the third site in Finland to receive the European Heritage Label.
Varkaus’ industrial cultural heritage offers an Eastern Finnish perspective on the history of European industrialisation spanning nearly three centuries. The city’s development is closely intertwined with major European transformations – from iron production to steam power, from canal construction to the rise of the labour movement, and the emergence of the welfare state. At the same time, it tells the story of Varkaus’ resilience through industrial transitions that have reshaped Europe, growing into a driving force of export industry in Eastern Finland.
The label was officially awarded to Varkaus in Brussels on 22 April 2026.

European Heritage Label in brief
What is the European Heritage Label?
The European Heritage Label (EHL) is an award granted by the European Commission to sites that have played a key role in European history, culture, and integration.
Sites awarded the label may include entire environments and areas, buildings, events, or intangible cultural heritage. What unites them is their symbolic value: European Heritage Label sites help people understand how present-day Europe has been shaped. They tell the story of history, values, and shared development in a way that goes beyond national borders. These sites bring the European Union and its citizens closer together.
By 2026, the label has been awarded to a total of 80 sites. In Finland, the European Heritage Label has been granted to three sites: the Seminaarinmäki campus of the University of Jyväskylä and its tradition of equal education, the Kalevala – a living epic tradition, and the living industrial heritage of Varkaus.
The label is awarded by the European Commission based on proposals from member states. In Finland, the application process and the use of the label are coordinated by the Finnish Heritage Agency.
The European Heritage Label differs from the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is not based on the beauty or architectural value of a site, but on its symbolic significance. Rather than preservation alone, the label emphasises the content, activities, and especially the educational value of the site.
Why was the European Heritage Label awarded to Varkaus?
The European Commission awarded Varkaus the European Heritage Label specifically as a living industrial cultural site, where industrial heritage remains strong and visible everywhere – in the streets, factory environments, people’s stories, skills, and in today’s active industry.
With the label, Varkaus has joined a distinguished group of European sites that strengthen understanding of shared history, promote learning based on cultural heritage, tell the story of European unity and values, and serve as platforms for international cooperation and innovation.
The European Heritage Label highlights Varkaus’ diverse industrial history and, in particular, the industrial community’s ability to survive, renew itself, and evolve across different eras. A continuous industrial legacy spanning nearly 300 years makes Varkaus a unique site within Europe.
To date, there are very few European industrial heritage sites with this recognition. While many sites represent stages of industrial production that have already ended, in Varkaus, multi-sector industry continues to generate new industrial cultural history. Varkaus is not a preserved historic mill environment, but an international, constantly evolving hub of expertise and a driving force of exports in Eastern Finland.
The city’s industrial cultural heritage offers an Eastern Finnish perspective on the history of European industrialisation across nearly three centuries. The development of Varkaus is closely intertwined with major European transformations – from iron production to steam power, from canal construction to the rise of the labour movement, and the emergence of the welfare state.
Varkaus’ industrial heritage is deeply connected to its identity. Industry has shaped how the community understands work, expertise, and responsibility. The label makes visible what has long been recognised in Varkaus: industrial heritage is not just the past, but a value to be openly proud of. For this reason, the label does not belong only to a specific area, a single organisation, or industry alone – it belongs to the entire city community. Every resident, company, organisation, and visitor is part of the Varkaus story and its future.
